Texturing models
After Aaron, Matt and Piers had retopoloized, rigged and uv unwrapped the models for the man, boy and dog, I was tasked with texturing the models. Considering we had already discussed and finalised the character designs and their colour schemes this was quite straightforward.
Below is the final textures for the boy, man and dog.
This is were we decided to paint the expressions onto our characters, rather than rig their faces for animation. The squared, blocky look the characters now had meant that the more limited facial animations looked better than dynamic 3D expressions. We could easily swap each texture out for another mid animation to create the illusion that the facial expressions shifted, blinked etc.
Above shows the way in which characters express themselves in our film.
Sound design
I also worked on sound design for the first half of our film. All sounds used for this sequence were taken from Youtubes sound effects board, and are free to use. I downloaded an assortment of wind, gun fire, explosions and screaming sound effects which I edited together to create an ominous and foreboding atmosphere.
One of the the lingering sounds heard in this sequence is a howling echoy sound which is actually various different people crying and screaming out at once. I had simply edited and distorted the audio to sound more like a dangerous howling wind. This plays for the first 15 seconds of the movie.
We also edited other sounds, such as bullets flying by, and adding reverb and echos to them to match the monster transforming into the smoke cloud. We did this to unsettle the audience, by supplying them with sounds that the may recognise but not using them for their intended purpose. We felt this also emphasised the unnatural and nightmare-esque air the monster has around it.
