For the run cycle I looked at motion in real life, and how running looks and moves in reality, to see how if it could help me create more grounded and solid animation.
Research
I wanted this animation to appear more grounded that the walk cycle, so I took photos of my mother jogging up and down on the spot to get a sense of weight and where the feet land when jogging on the spot. I found that drawing over the photos allowed me to develop a better understanding of how the hips, legs and feet shift from one pose to another.
The points in motion that blur emphasises the force of movement carried, therefore it is important for me to time my frames to recreate that sense of movement and velocity.
Animation
Animating the run cycle followed much the same process as with the walk cycle. Adhering to setting out the passing, contact, up and down poses and the altering the joints and other appendages’ functions to make the movement more fluid and realistic. Below is the final result.
I am very happy with the outcome of this animation. I felt that this one has a better loop than my last one, as the joints an weight to the character fell more natural.
In my next animation I wish to put more focus on anticipation. The run cycle has a very methodical stride to it, I feel that by creating a buildup to the next movement in animation by controlling the spacing of the frames I can create more expressive action in my animation.
