For our first assignment of this semester we were tasked to model, UV unwrap, texture and render, either a sword and shield, witch or wizard staff, telescope, mantel clock, windmill, a column, sci-fi door, or a well.
I enjoyed all of the concepts and wanted to give each ample thought and equal opportunity to potentially model. Therefore alongside each I will show my references and development of ideas. Below are some of my concept designs for each of the objects.
Magic Witch/ Wizards Staff
For the staffs I wanted to approach them both differently. The Witches staff looks very whimsical, sleek and elegant, and was inspired by some of John R Niells illustrations from the Oz Novels. I did enjoy this design, however I felt that it was too simple looking, and I wouldn't be challenging myself as much as I would like too.

The wizards staff looks more 'put together' and worn. This wasn't based off of anything particular, and I simply made it up as I went along. I chose not to go for the staff for this reason, as without careful planning, it may not translate to 3D very well.
Mantel Clock
The mantel clock was a challenging design to come up with. I found it difficult to think what direction I could take it and make it unique. So I stated looking at some of the furniture and objects around my home for inspiration. What I can up with looked very elegant. I wasn't completely in love with the look however, and decided not to go forward with this concept.

Sci- Fi Door
For the sci-fi door I went for a look that was very blocky and geometric, inspired by Alien Isolation 2014. I did like this design, but I felt as though the design I came up with personally wasn't as creative as I wanted it to be.

Antique Telescope
The antique telescope deign was not my favorite. I found it difficult to develop an concept that was unique. Admittedly I didn't put much thought into the design in the end. I did like the carving design I made for it though, and I want to include it in the object I intent to model.

Greek Column
The Greek column was another fun concept. I found the geometric design simple yet visually very interesting. Most of the flare the column would have would come from the designs and carvings. I decided to look at some of the furniture in my home for this design, as well as any other materials I could find. I came up with a floral concept with weaving lines. I really enjoyed how this design looked, and while I wont be modeling the column I want the carving designs to be apart of what I do choose.

Old Well
The well was another fun concept. I found that making a traditional, simple well, would be interesting to model in Maya. Making the object look very old and worn would be really interesting to work into and develop. I decide not to go through with this design ultimately, as I don't feel I pushed the design far enough.
Windmill
The windmill design was one of my favorite. I wanted to make a fantasy windmill, but put a spin on the architecture in a unique way. Then I had the idea to look at traditional Japanese architecture and iconography, and mold an idea based on my findings. Looking at Japanese bath houses and its signature dragon designs, resulted in the look above. I was very close to choosing this design, but ultimately chose the sword and shield design, as I felt that is where I was most creative.

Sword and Shield
I really enjoyed the concept of the second sword and two shields, as I based them of a lizard. The Shield-Tail Agama is a lizard with a growth on its back similar to that of a shield. I found this concept very interesting and decided to explore it further.
The Sword concept design is a whole lizard, with the blade being its tail and the handle being its body. The four prongs on either side would be its feet and would curve in a form similar to how lizards actually walk.
The two shields are based off of the shield-tail agamas back growth, stylized this spikes and carvings, to give the shield a more unique flare. I also played around with possibly incorporating other animals into the designs of both, as on a trip to the ulster museum showed various insects with fluorescent hard shells which I found very inspiring.
I liked this concept a lot, as the design are very appealing to me, and the seem both challenging and doable.
