Following our introduction to the course, we were sorted into groups and tasked to come up with concepts for a video game cover. This allowed us to understand the work environment and work expected of us. It taught us vital team working and communication skills.
Concept Design
Rosie, Joshua, Natasha, Piers and myself, brainstormed several ideas, genres, and themes to form an interesting concept. We then decided we liked the idea of a cats versus dogs in space, and decided to develop concept art at home, and meet up the next day and present the directions we could take the idea.
I decided to explore creature concepts by creating a hoover monster, which was inspired by the xenomorph alien from Alien 1979. The basis of the idea came from dogs natural fear of hoovers. I looked at three-pin and two-pin plugs for the hands and feet of the creature, the tail has three electrified wires which are its main weapon.
Poster Design
After comparing our ideas we concluded that the cover art of our video game, should avoid being crowed and messy, so we decided to keep the conflict exclusively between the cats and dogs. We then brainstormed compositions and assigned everyone their tasks for the next group meeting. I decided to go for a retro, arcade game cover, with the three main characters centered with the villain looming over them. Interestingly when we compared our composition, the all looked very similar, so we went forward in agreement with that layout.
Final Character Designs
.
With the layout covered, we had Joshua design the title card, Piers complete the background and Natasha draw the evil cat character, which we decided should be a sphynx cat. My role was to illustrate the three main dogs, which we decided should be a Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd and Shiba Inu. We looked at 1950's retro poster art to inspired our art style, so that everyone work looked complimentary.
Final Outcome
Once we gathered all our work together, Rosie edited it together to create the final piece. To create more movement in our work, I had to save the dogs tails and ears on separate layers so that Rosie could animate them. With everyone's work finally completed, our final idea, Journey to the Pawsmos, was finished.
Reflecting on our work, I found we all communicated and worked extremely well together. We all contributed equally and produced a video game cover, that looks both visually appealing and consistent in design.
