Week 3- Ortus, Microscopic World

Updated: Dec 16, 2018

As we approached week three, we were switched around and placed in a new group, with a new world work on. Both Donal and myself were placed in a group who's idea explored a world within a Petri Dish. Our task as a group was to created thumbnail sketches of what this world might look like.

Thumbnail Sketches

I found creating the thumbnails more challenging than i initially expected, blocking in large shapes and forms is a different approach to world building than i expected, as i am more accustomed to planning my work ahead of time and detailing as much as i can. This task allowed me to creatively challenge myself and loosen up my approach to concept art.

Landscape Concepts

I looked at various objects magnified, and developed how I imagine the environment with a Petri Dish would look from there. I found the geometric shape of salt and the surface coins compelling, and looked to Aztec architecture for inspiration, due the reliance on solid, geometric design for most buildings of this era.

Exploring the different types of environments that can exist on a microscopic level, I became inspired by the aquatic-esque look of amoeba to explore bacteria in water. I then looked at coral, and found that the surface a chameleons foot resembles oceanic reefs an was inspired to explore this concept.
