Moving forward from our initial concepts we were tasked with producing refined tonal studies of our worlds to further our development. We each took a different environment within our world to work on. I chose to look at salt, bone and rock.
Tonal Studies
My first tonal study, was of amoeba flying over a lake of agar and rock. This concept was in my opinion very unorganized. The actual environment itself does not read as a microscopic setting, and the amoeba looks very similar to an aurora borealis, or a dragon. Whilst interesting, was not the direction we wished to develop our world. So, while unused, educated me to communicate more with the group and take their ideas on board, rather that work my self into a corner, which I rectified moving forward into our work.
Real World Inspireations
Given that salt has such a detailed geometric design, constructing a setting which resembles architecture was interesting to explore. I chose to look at the Guildhall in Derry for inspiration. I mainly looked at not the form of the building, but the spires protruding from it, so as to capture the essence of a castle, or just in general, an 'important' structure
For my next two tonal studies, i looked at salt once again, and bone. Bone under a microscope has many cavities, which look very much like caves. When looking at viruses i thought the combination of evil viruses living within the 'caves' of bones like monsters an interesting concept to explore
Finally, with regard to the salt concept, i decided to make the structure look less organized and more organic looking, to lend to the authentic appearance of salt under a microscope. However, I still wanted to maintain a grand atmosphere, thus i retain the salt spires concept.
Contextual Inspireations
Lastly I decided to look at what the interior of the cancer cell at the heart of the world may look like. Given that this is the centre of all things evil in this world I decided to make this place look as gruesome and evil as I could. Which I once again received inspiration from Alien 1979, specifically the concept art and visual design of the film, which was created by H.R. Geiger
